Emissaries - I’ve been hearing stories about animals that belong in the wilderness coming to the reserve and also to the cities. People are seeing wolves, deer, elk, moose, bears, coyote, even the eagles are coming to the city to check out the people.  I’m reminded of a story that was told by the fire one night many years in the past. This is one of the many stories told about what was to come in the future.

In this story it was said that the Earth summoned the animals of the forest to find out why the people of the Earth were no longer caring for the Earth. The animals gathered and talked about sending emissaries to the humans hoping to find some who could still communicate with nature. They remembered a time when the people of the Earth and nature were as one. The people of this land lived as one with all of nature and never took more than was needed to survive. There was always an understanding and an unspoken rule about taking care of the Earth.

It was said that there would be a time of strangers coming and every place they went destruction would follow. The people of the Earth would be forced to accept a new way and the past would be forgotten. Some would struggle to remember and preserve the past but it would be no longer possible to live with nature as it would no longer exist.

This sign of the animals coming, is a sure sign that the Earth is in serious trouble. The animals were sent to see what has happened to the people of the Earth. If the people of the Earth were all gone than it was a hopeless mission for the emissaries to even come for help. The animals would come each one hoping to meet someone who would remember and help save the Earth.

The elders say it is a sign that the end is close and the animals are bringing this news hoping that someone might care enough to try saving the Earth.

It is so difficult to change these newcomers who are so bent on controlling nature and taking everything for themselves. They are fully aware that they are destroying the Earth but each hopes that they live a full life before the Earth becomes uninhabitable. Their children see this truth and run wild in the streets because the love they seek is nowhere to be found and their parents no longer care about the future. They say our children are our future but by their own actions or inactions take that same future away by destroying the Earth.

The ones at the top will do all that they can to silence the people of the Earth and many will cross the line to live this false reality.

Greed was the sickness that first tore the tribes apart and it has returned to take the rest. Without God interfering in these plans man has made to end all life it will surly come without a struggle. What is God to do if man does not want the life it has been given.

The Earth and the forces of nature on the other hand may put up a fight.

When money is the only motivation to keep life going than all is lost to money. Your every thought will focus on the money you have or the money you could have. There is no thought given to love as it will not make you any money. People will marry someone with money rather then someone with love. Men and women have married for money and lived whole lives in a false reality having everything but true love.

For some it is enough to have money for to love means caring about others and if you allow you’re self to care about others you might not be able to lie, cheat and steal all the riches you desire.

Our people’s biggest dilemma in trying to find our place in the white man’s reality is this question of love for God and life. We have always been thought to respect all life and that each creation has a part to play in the whole scheme of creation. To think that you could kill a part of the whole and go on living is foolish. If you run killing everything in your path than you’ll find that you have killed many things that you’ll need to keep on living. It is said that all people turn to God in the end as they lay dying, it’s really to bad that some don’t turn to God sooner.

Eedoomni

Eedoomni was always looking for an easy way to do things because he was lazy and didn't like to work for anything he wanted. He went about the camp begging off the hardworking people. He knew the people believed that they were to help the poor so he took advantage of this. The people grew tired of his constant begging and his refusal to work so they started to avoid him. He would try to visit and people would not answer even though he could hear them moving about inside the teepee.

The only person that still fed and helped Eedoomni was the local medicine man. This was a man even Eedoomni had come to respect because of his wisdom. This medicine man always seen through Eedoomni and he never let Eedoomni take advantage of him. Eedoomni had to chop wood and help with the sweat lodge as well as chores to pay for his keep. Eedoomni always wondered how this medicine man could survive on the charity he received from his patients. People came from all over the country to bring gifts of food and sometimes horses so this medicine man could go to them to help them. Eedoomni wanted to be like this man and would try to learn his secrets so people would bring him gifts and horses for travel.

He asked the medicine man if he would teach him how to be a medicine man but he simply told him it was a lot of hard work and would most likely take most of Eedoomni's life just to get started. This was not what Eedoomni wanted to hear and was disappointed. He persistently asked for help to become a medicine man and the old man grew tired of his asking so he agreed to help. He told Eedoomni that it involved going on a fast on the hill. After persuading Eedoomni to enter the sweat lodge and work on his weaknesses the old man explained that Eedoomni must face all his fears and weaknesses before attempting to go on a vision quest.

It was explained that while on the hill he might be tested and visited by the spirits and was to remain on the hill no matter what. He was also told that sometimes the spirits would not come if the person was thought to be unhealthy spiritually. Finally the old man reluctantly told Eedoomni that if a person did not prepare properly and went on the hill with a dark heart he would have to face that darkness that the person took to the hill. That's why it was better to purify yourself before considering the vision quest. After preparing and explaining all this to Eedoomni the old man asked if Eedoomni wanted to go through with it. He emphasized that Eedoomni could wait if he was not comfortable with the timing, as it was not something to be rushed. Since Eedoomni was so intent on doing this the old man helped him as much as he could and hoped that Eedoomni would come down the hill a better person.

They reached the hill and the sweat lodge was set up and the final preparations were made. The following morning Eedoomni would go on the hill to seek his destiny. Some people had agreed to help the old man and were there to help any way they could. All together there were seven people in the camp. They all fell asleep as soon as the camp was set up. Eedoomni was the last one awake and he sat there by the fire nervously staring at the hill. He realized he would be all alone up there with no food and water for four days. The very thought of it started him drinking as much water as he could and he ate as much as he could. After stuffing himself he tried to sleep but could not drift off as he normally did, the thought of being up on the hill in total darkness scared him.

Just as he started to sleep everyone in camp woke up one after another. Each person relieved himself than washed in spring near the camp. Eedoomni lay there as long as he could but had to get up as the sun came into view. He was to start his journey to the top of the hill very soon so he went to relieve himself and tried not to look nervous. The old man sensed how Eedoomni was feeling so he told him once again if he truly was not ready, no one would think badly of him if he decided not to follow through with this.

Eedoomni thought of all the times he had to beg for his needs. He thought of all he had to gain if he could accomplish his goal. This renewed his commitment to follow through with what he started. The old man and one of the helpers took Eedoomni to the top of the hill and left him with some final instructions. A circle of stones was placed around Eedoomni and he was told that he was not to step out of that circle for any reason. He could stand, sit or lay down but he was not to sleep. He was to fight off the urge to sleep or his efforts would be meaningless. If he was visited while asleep he would miss his chance as it would indicate he was not serious. Eedoomni listened to the final instructions and said he understood and with that he was left on the hill by himself.

Eedoomni sat there and thought of all the things he hoped to have when he became the one people went to for help. The sun climbed to the top of its own hill and started down the other side toward the west. Eedoomni seemed to be in a dream world of his own as he did not remember the sun rising to its highest point but he could tell it was on its way down. He felt hot and thirsty but tried to focus on other things. He lay down to stare at the sky and watched as the winds moved and stretched the clouds high above.

Eedoomni turned his head and tried to get more comfortable. He was suddenly gripped with fear. He lay motionless and listened as he became conscious of his surroundings. He was in total darkness and he could not hear anything. He thought about the old man warning him about carrying darkness in his heart to the hill and having to face it. He thought about sitting by the fire and being scared of the dark. All at once he realized that he had fallen asleep. He also realized that he had eaten to much as he had a strong urge to poop. He remembered the old man stressing that he was not to leave the circle for any reason. He wondered what would happen to him if he pooped on this sacred site. He stood up to look around but could only see where the stars began on the horizon. He looked up and noticed that something was hovering above him. He quickly looked down and tried to pretend he didn't see anything, but the fear that was building up in him forced him to look again. As he turned his eyes upward he knew what he was looking at was as real as anything. There above him about the height of two men hovered a dark mass, it was so dark that it blocked out the stars. It was as if a rip had been torn in the sky and darkness was poring through. Eedoomni was so scared that his bowels started to move and in an instant he was moving down the hill at such a speed that he didn't feel the ground below him. In his rush to get off the hill he had run off in the opposite direction as the camp. He kept running until he became aware that he could see as if it were day light. He stopped to catch his breath and rest. As scared as he was he forced himself to look up. The dark mass was no longer there. A cloud had passed over the moon and now that it was out of the way he could see. He didn't know what to think as the dark mass he had seen seemed very real. He wondered if that cloud could have been that dark mass and in his fear he had only imagined it. He wasn't sure but one thing that was very real was the fact that he had pooped himself. After he got his thoughts together he started to laugh at his stupidity and was nearly hysterical when he was hit on the side of the head and knocked unconscious.

As Eedoomni rode back to his own people he thought of the past three years and wondered why he was allowed to leave. He also realized that the people he had left were quite different from his own yet spoke in a similar language. He was given to the sorcerer of this tribe to serve as his helper. At first Eedoomni thought he might continue his education in healing but that was far from the truth.

All of the events that took place had been planned out by the sorcerer and his evil spirits. They had been waiting for a chance to strike back at the tribe Eedoomni was from. The evil spirits that helped this sorcerer told him that Eedoomni was to be captured when he went to the hill and brought back so he could be used. It did not take long to convince Eedoomni to change his way of thinking as his greedy nature and lazy ways were still there in his heart. This little bit of darkness was enough to plant a bad seed that would grow and infect the tribe Eedoomni was from. The evil spirits had wanted to disrupt the peaceful balance that these people had achieved. The evil couldn't grow anymore here so it wanted to move into Eedoomni's tribe to challenge the medicine man there. They had watched Eedoomni from a distance waiting for the right moment. They had nearly lost him on the hill and probably would have if Eedoomni had managed the four days. Eedoomni opened the door for the evil spirits with his fear and doubt, but leaving the circle of stones was his biggest mistake.

The plan was to teach Eedoomni the evil ways of the sorcerer and send him back to corrupt his own people. Once Eedoomni had a foothold on his people the evil spirits could work their black magic. Eedoomni noticed that the sorcerer was not loved as the medicine man was but he was feared and this was how he held power over his own people. The sorcerer always held the people in his grip by instilling fear in them. The evil spirits went about and caused mischief and harm to the people and they would turn to the sorcerer who always knew what to do to alleviate the problem. The sorcerer himself always told the people that they were in danger and if they felt they needed help he would always be there. If the sorcerer seen something he wanted from a member of his tribe, that person would fall into some misfortune and would eventually come for help at which time the possession would gained by the sorcerer in trade for his services. Over time the sorcerer corrupted Eedoomni and soon had Eedoomni doing all his bidding while he sat and watched. Eedoomni was greedy and that's the door the evil spirits used to step into him. Once inside they conquered his entire being and ruined him mind, body and spirit. His desire for wealth and power over the people held him captive and he no longer had to beg for what he needed. His evil side laughed as people turned to him in fear. People turned to him to fix the problem he and his evil spirits had caused. The people eagerly gave their possessions to him and soon Eedoomni had his own home and horses. Eedoomni was getting to much attention and the sorcerer was getting jealous because people were starting to go see Eedoomni more than him. The time was right to send Eedoomni back to his own people so one day the sorcerer went to see Eedoomni and told him about all the riches just waiting for him at his own peoples camp. Eedoomni thought of his own people and how well off they were. He also thought of all the times he had to beg from them and the times he was turned away because he had not tried to help himself. He imagined returning and making everyone pay for making him beg. It didn't even occur to him that he was the cause of his own problem.

When he rode into his own people's camp many wondered who he was and where he came from because he knew the call that told the people that he was a relative. As recognition dawned on the people many could do nothing more than stand and stare. Everyone thought of the story of how Eedoomni had disappeared from the hill. As people often did many rumors were started about what happened that night. Eedoomni was cloaked in a shroud of mystery and he took full advantage of it. He spoke of how he was whisked away by spirits and taught many things while away. Soon everyone came to his teepee to hear more, everyone but the old medicine man. Eedoomni instinctively avoided the old man. The old man was not fooled for a moment and waited to see what would become of this foolish thing that claimed to be Eedoomni. Knowing that Eedoomni was the only one who could free himself from the evil he embraced the old man prayed for Eedoomni.

All the good spirits that helped the old man came but each in turn repeated what the old man already knew. It was up to Eedoomni to decide which path he would take and the good spirits had to wait for Eedoomni to ask for help before they could intervene. The only other time they had interceded was when an innocent person was wronged. If a person willingly went to the evil side they would have to have the will to abandon their evil ways and call on God and the good spirits in order to recieve help.

With Eedoomni misleading the people it was not long before chaos ruled in the camp. One by one the people started to talk and many pointed a finger at Eedoomni and that the problems started just after he returned. People started to turn to the old man for answers but all he would say was to pray for the answer to be revealed. Eedoomni noticed that people were not coming to him as often and one of his followers told him that people were starting to talk about him. Eedoomni was so angry he threatened the person but all he knew was that many were talking. He suspected the old man but knew that the old man never spoke badly of anyone. He would not rest till he found out who started the talk.

Eedoomni sat alone for days and finally decided to ask for help in finding out who had started all the trouble in the camp. As he entered his sweat lodge he felt uneasiness around him. Sitting alone in his sweat he prayed and asked to find the the person who had started all the trouble in the camp. His evil spirit helpers fell silent then he was told not to pursue the matter as it would not be worth it and if he didn't stop they would no longer help him. Eedoomni became enraged and said he deserved what he was asking for. Then he said is their no one who would help find this trouble maker. If you won't help than give me a pipe that will make people speak the truth. All at once the sweat was full of activity and it scared Eedoomni half to death and he tried to get as low to the ground as he could. He had his eyes closed so tight it hurt his entire face, and then he started to cry. In his moment of rage without knowing it he had opened the door for the good spirits to come in. They had been waiting for a chance to right the bad things that had come to the people. When Eedoomni asked for help in finding the trouble maker and for the pipe of truth the good spirits had their chance to help.

Eedoomni didn't know how long he had been laying there but the rocks were cold and it was silent when he came to. Eedoomni opened the door of the sweat and the sun poured in and as he turned his head to shield himself from the light he saw something at the back of the sweat. Eedoomni couldn't believe his eyes, there at the back of the sweat sat a beautiful pipe bag.

As Eedoomni walked through the sleeping camp he thought of how to get the information he needed from the people. At first he thought of inviting each person one at a time to have them smoke the pipe but it would take to long. Eedoomni decided that the best thing to do would be to light the pipe in front of all the people at once. The people were naturally curious so Eedoomni would have the camp crier announce that a pipe had appeared out of no where and Eedoomni invited all the people to come see.

The people were gathered in a big circle to witness this spectacular event which every one attended. There at the head of the circle sat Eedoomni with an unusual smile. The old man sensed something strange was going on so he had come and sat at the very end of the circle to the right of Eedoomni. A hush fell on the crowd as the pipe was taken from the bag. Eedoomni slowly prepared the pipe so everyone would smoke.

Eedoomni stood up and proudly held the pipe in the air so everyone could see it. Then he told the people how special this pipe was as it had appeared in his sweat out of no where. He went on to say that this was a pipe of truth, given to the people as they were favored by God and the good spirits and all who smoked it would speak the truth. With this he lit the pipe and took a deep breath and as he exhaled something happened that would be remembered forever. As the smoke came out of his lungs people saw an unusual black cloud move out of Eedoomni. He handed the pipe to the next person to his left than Eedoomni stood up and started to talk about all the wicked deeds he had committed with the help of of the evil spirits. He tried to stop himself but to his surprise he was unable to. He spoke at length about how the evil spirits used people to do their bidding and revealed many things about the dark side. All the people watched as Eedoomni was transformed into a totally different person.

By speaking the truth he freed himself from the evil and with the gift of the pipe the people learned a very valuable lesson. When you start telling lies to get your way you open the door for evil spirits to come and disrupt your balance. With the pipe of truth the people freed themselves and never allowed evil to step into anyone again.

Truth is something the people have come to respect and is very much a part of the values the old ones have passed on. Some have forgotten about how truth can free you and this story is for them.
