NIKOODI BALL PARK IS NAMED "JOE PETERS MEMORIAL BALL PARK"

Joe Peter (1927-1969)

Joe Peter was born and raised on the Alexis Reserve. His parents were Mary Louise Aginas Paul and Babtise Peter from Paul Band in Duffielld, Alberta.

Joe most likely spent a lot of his childhood years in the Blue Ridge area where his parents lived off the land. He also attended the residential school in Ste. Albert, Alberta some time during that period.

During the 1930’s and 40’s when tuberculosis was in rampant, Joe contacted TB and spent his young years in the Charles Camsell Indian Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta.  With his life in jeopardy, was determined to survive the disease. After numerous surgeries later, he was discharged from the hospital in the early 1950’s.

Joes’ keen interest in sports soon brought new changes on the Alexis reserve. Men like Joe and a group of sport enthusiasts paved the way for the descendants of today with start of baseball and hockey on reserve.

Using makeshift and limited equipment, the early athletes persevered to success and the Alexis A’s baseball team was established.

In 1953-1954, the team took league championship on route 43 against other teams in neighboring towns as far west as Whitecourt and north to Barrhead.

Hockey was another challenge for the Alexis group. The hockey rink was a rigged out area on ponds around the reserve or a cleared spot in the snow. However, the lack of facilities did not deter the hockey team from winning may of their games.

There are still evidence of old rink sites with the remains of tamarack poles still standing in some ponds today. The spirit of ball and hockey, and the enthusiasm shown by our fans of all ages, has kept the memory of the founders of sports on reserve very much alive today, and will continue to grow for many years to come.
